Getting Ready for the New Year-Hoppin’ John

Tomorrow will be the first lunch of the new year and also the first of only a few family dinners I will host. With such a large family, the holidays are spread around, and we only get a few each.

As tradition calls for, we will feast on several traditional dishes for New Year’s Day. One will be Hoppin’ John.

I made it today by browning my hog jowl in a small saucepot. Then, I removed the hog jowl and drained some of the fat out of the pan. To the pot, I then added one onion and one green pepper. I let them sweat for a while, and then I mixed in two cups of cooked rice, two cans of blackeye peas, the hog jowl, and some garlic powder and pepper.

This will cool, and I will warm it back up before lunch tomorrow.  Hopefully, this dish will help bring prosperity to our family in the new year.
